Starting a Profitable Blog

I have been blogging part-time for about a year now. Better yet, I have been making a decent income blogging for the past year with a small following. I started this blog last January when I decided I wanted to help other parents by providing various tips and now am helping parents, bloggers, and parent-bloggers with different blogging tips. I started this blog so I could be a stay-at-home mom, earn enough income while doing it, and eventually start traveling the world with my little family.

Ever since I started my blog I have had one very common question pop-up: “How do you start a blog?”. Another common question I get is, “Is it hard to make money blogging?”.

These questions prompted me to write this post.

While starting a blog can take a little time to set up initially, it is something everyone can do. To make things easier I decided to create a step by step guide that you can follow so you ca get your blog set up in no time.

In this post I am going to teach you all how to start your own blog using WordPress and self hosting through Bluehost. This is the way that I started my blog, and the best way to start blogging for a few reasons.

  • You can get your own website and you don’t even have to know how to code or really any tech related stuff as your website host will help with all of that.
  • You can start earning income immediately-hello affiliate income!
  • This post has special links that will allow you to get website hosting(which is what you need to get started) at a discounted rate and even a free domain name($20 value). The discount is only valid through the links I provide here. This deal won’t last forever so start as soon as you can so you don’t miss out on the special pricing and free domain.

If you want to be sure to use my link to follow along with this post and get the special discount, and the free domain name you can click here then follow along below.

The reason that I have been using Bluehost for my blog, and helping others sign up with it is because:

  • It is inexpensive compared to hosting from other platforms
  • Their customer support is excellent. They have helped resolve multiple issues in a timely fashion. You can install WordPress with one click so there is no need for any previous blogging knowledge.
  • They have a support staff dedicated to helping bloggers with WordPress, so they are always helpful.
  • If you want to use another form of hosting that is fine. You will just want to skip to part 2-4 of this series.

Let’s Get Your Blog Started!

What you need to start a blog:

  • The first thing you will need is idea of what type of blog you want to start.
  • A computer
  • Money for hosting depending on your plan, or how long you to purchase your blog for you’re looking at about $65-142 for 1 to 3 years of hosting, and a .com website domain name.
  • Goals to hit with your blog

What I’ll be explaining In this post:

  • How to set up your blog’s domain and hosting.
  • How to  install WordPress (where you actually write your blog posts)
  • How to create and write your first post.
  • How to install plugins and a theme.
  • How to create a logo.

When starting out with a blog it is easy to get feelings of being overwhelmed, thoughts that no one will care about or read your blog. Truth is if you put some heart and soul into your blog along with doing some marketing(we will go over in a future post), you will get traffic to your site.

A few months into my blogging efforts I have consistently made a few thousand each month in profit. I am just an ordinary person like you so if I can do this, so ca you.

Beyond the fear you may feel about others viewing your blog you may also be concerned with pricing. Luckily Bluehost has excellent pricing. My first year was only about $70 which is super affordable. Starting a blog on a budget is not hard if you are willing to put in a little time (around 20 minutes). This 4 part series will take you through everything you need to know to create a blog for less than $70 a year.

I didn’t fail I know you won’t fail if you are motivated. That is all it takes.

The reasons you should create a blog are truly endless but here are a few to get you motivated.

  • Anyone of at any age can start a blog.
  • You don’t need any experience to start a blog.
  • Side income
  • Full time income
  • An outlet for expression
  • Freedom
  • Chance to build relationships
  • A place to be creative
  • Anyone can start a blog and be successful.

So let’s get started already!

Step One: Deciding On a Domain Name

Time to decide what you want your blog to be called so you can pick out your domain name! What should you call your blog? Here’s a few tips to get you started.

Side note: I recommend getting a .com not a .net or .co because it looks more professional and is easier to remember.

  • Keep it short for social media purposes. Also short & sweet is easier for people to remember
  • Keep it simple. Again, easier to remember.
  • Keep it to one specific type of topic. For example, food blogs should be about food.
  • Make sure you are not imposing on name rights. Make sure to do a name search beforehand to be sure the name you chose is not owned. Using your name is often a good option.
  • Keep the name professional.
  • Make sure it is available. Bluehost will allow you to check if the domain name is available before submitting. Check below to see if your website name is available.

Step Two: Picking A Hosting Platform

Since you just decided what you wanted to call your blog let’s get it started. With Bluehost you get a free domain if you use my link so you can go right into step two. If you decided to host your blog on another platform you are going to have to go buy your domain name first from somewhere like GoDaddy.

Bluehost:

What you get: 1 free domain, hosting, free WordPress.org installation and 50% off (if you use my link)

Get Bluehost by clicking here

When you click any of the links in this post (or right here) to sign up for Bluehost. You get a special discount for using my link. The discount is over 50% annually plus you get a free domain (you’ll be saving more than $50 dollars annually). The price you get through my link is $3.95 a month (you can only get it when using my link) as normally the prices starts at $7.99 a month. It is a wonderful deal to take advantage of.

Step Three: Picking A Bluehost Plan

You are going to go here to Bluehost.com. You will come to the Bluehost home screen and click “get started now” on the banner. This will take you to a landing page where you will select the type of plan you want. I recommend selecting the smallest plan because you can always upgrade later. That way you can save some money up front and just invest the money you make in the future back into your blog by upgrading it.

After you have decided what plan you want click “select”. Now we move on to Step 4.

Step Four: Creating A Bluehost Account

Now enter the name you want in the “new domain” box. If you already bought a domain from a place like GoDaddy then enter that in the “I have a domain name” box. Then click the “next” button.  On the next screen you will type in your information, such as, your email and name. This account is where you will sign in to manage all your blog settings such as email, and advertising. So choose an email you have accesses to and plan to use for a while when you start your blog. Then scroll down to step 5.

Step Five: Choosing A Hosting Package + Length

After you have finished creating your account scroll down and select your package information. Deselect all of the add on features because there are great WordPress plugins that do the same things for free (we talk about that in part 4 of this series ). After deselecting all the add on features go for whichever package option you feel meets your needs.

Step Six: Payment

Now it is time to select your payment. Then you are on your way! It will take about 5-10 minutes for Bluehost to set up your website. When your website is set up you will receive an email so you can install WordPress.org. Once you can, login to Bluehost you can move on to step 7.

Step Seven: Choose a password

This step is pretty simple. Follow to images below if you need a step by step guide for setting up the password.

Step Eight: Pick A Theme!

The page that comes up should look like this:

pickatheme

Pick the theme you feel looks best. In part two of this series we will review themes further so no worries if you don’t like it. Now for the finally step!

Step Nine: Finish it Up

Wow, that wasn’t so bad, huh? You figured out how to set up your own blog and you don’t even know how to code. The beauty of hosting I tell you.

Now you can go ahead and click start building:

all done

Pick Business or Personal.

Go to step two now to edit your  theme, write posts, get your about and sidebar ready. When you are ready to make your blog public click Launch in blue above.

Once you click launch  and name your site  your home page will now look like this:

You will be ready to access your WordPress blog any time by clicking the “My Sites” button along the left side of your screen.

Whew! You made it. Your blog is already well on it’s way to bringing you some cash flow. Get ready for part two of this four part series which will be posted in upcoming weeks.

I am so glad you decided to take this journey to start your own blog. Bloggers Unite!
